Even those most diligent about keeping wedding costs under control may see that tally adding up faster than they would like. The issue often is the seemingly little things because when you add up all the individual costs, it can result in a big-time expense. Wedding favors in particular have the potential to become a significant expense, especially if you are feeling the pressure to impress . The fact is, you can easily forego them altogether, but if it is important to you that your guests have some memento of your wedding, there are ways to do it without spending a ton.

Do Some Serious Comparison Shopping

While it is tempting to just buy the first thing you seek, and tedious to comparison shop, it is a must if you truly want to maximize your savings and minimize your spending on wedding favors. Compare prices for online and offline vendors; but, to make sure you are getting the best price, it is important to do a couple of calculations. That online deal may not be as great when you factor in shipping or it may be better if you are not getting charged sales tax.

Do not Just Look at Wedding-Specific Vendors

Anything related to a wedding will simply cost more than it would for any other purpose. You may be able to save money by looking beyond vendors that are catering specifically to weddings and other events. If you have a particular type of item in mind for your favor, seek out sites and stores that may carry it—for example, you may get a great deal on picture frames from a whole sale dealer or chocolates from a chocolatiers.

Considerations for Bulk and Discontinued Items

Before shelling out money for identical items for dozens of guest or more, such as gift bags, make sure to check if there are options to buy in bulk—even if it is more than you need, it still may work out to less money. You might also want to consider building your favors around items that are more likely to be available for bulk purchase, such as candy, soaps and candles.

Another way to save is to look for items that are being discontinued; you just want to make sure that there is enough of whatever it is to make enough favors. If you are buying large amounts, it is worth a shot to try and negotiate an even lower price.

Look into Making Your Own Favors

While you might associate doing something like making wedding favors with some sort of artistic talent, nothing could be further from the truth. There are plenty of ideas that do not require this in the least. Who does not love a delicious treat—make some brownies or cookies at home and spruce them up a jar tied with a pretty ribbon. Make a compilation CD of your wedding playlist and print out your own personalized labels.
