Cleaning out your electric hot water heater once in a while can extend the lifetime of the heater. Sediment and rust will build up in the water heater over time, decreasing water temperature and causing the heater to work much harder. A hot water heater must be cleaned out once a year. If your home has well water or different water with high mineral content, flushing will be necessary a lot more often. 

Turn off the power to the electric hot water heater at the main breaker box. Be sure to tell everybody in the house to keep it off. Post a note on the breaker box if necessary.

 Hook up a garden hose to the drain valve that is located at the underside of the water heater. Run the hose out a door or window to the outside.

Turn off the water to the hot water heater. You’ll locate the water valve on the water line running from the heater.Raise the lever of the pressure release valve on top of the tank. Leave this open. 

Open the drain valve at the underside of the heater plus allow all of the water to drain out. Keep kids plus animals away from the area since the water draining will be hot. It will take thirty to 45 minutes for the heater to drain.Shut the drain valve and remove the water hose. Shut the pressure release valve at the top of the tank.Turn on the water to the hot water heater. Flip on a hot water faucet in the house and allow it to run till no air is during the lines. 

The hot-water heater was invented in 1889 by Edwin Ruud. Of Norwegian, Ruud settled in Pittsburgh, later founding Ruud Producing Company. The first hot-water heater was known as the “automatic storage water heater,” and was gas-fueled. Interest grew quickly, and the unit went under patent. In 1897, the 1st hot-water heaters went into production, selling for $one hundred pertaining to unit, a hefty value for the time. As extra economical methods of production followed, hot-water heaters became more affordable.
